ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Johnny Naize (Low Mountain, Many Farms, Nazlini, Tachee/Blue Gap, Tselani/Cottonwood), Speaker of the Navajo Nation Council, gave two keynote addresses and also visited the Governor of New Mexico’s Mansion for a reception.
Speaker Naize gave the morning keynote address at the Annual Winter Agency Meeting, which was held in Albuquerque. The meeting was attended by Chapter Coordinators and Account Maintenance Specialists from twenty-eight (28) out of thirty-one (31) chapters in the Eastern Agency.
This year’s conference theme was centered on staff development and included the following topics: Navajo Wellness, Team Building, Diabetes Awareness, GIS/Mapping, Dealing with Difficult People, and Customer Service.
Speaker Naize emphasized the importance of staff development and he also encouraged the chapter staff to continue their hard work but to also upkeep their health because of their necessary roles in the communities.
“You are the individuals who are responsible for direct service,” Naize stated. “It is because of your daily efforts that the community is well represented and I appreciate that you return to work daily and always put you best effort forward.”
Speaker Naize then gave the afternoon keynote address at the Community Health Representative (CHR) & Outreach Program’s Annual Meeting also held in Albuquerque, which was attend by CHRs from across the Navajo Nation.
The CHR conference included an update from the Navajo Public Health Department, a National Incident Management System (NIMS) & Incident Command System (ICS) refresher, and a session on Time Management.
“I am quite familiar with the work you do at the Chapter level because years ago I found myself working as a CHR,” Speaker Nazie commented. “I know that you are important to the community because of the close relationships you have with community members and because of the various subjects that you have to cover with community members.”
The Speaker ended his talk by thanking the participants of the conference for monitoring and improving the health of Navajo people all across the Navajo Nation.
Speaker Naize concluded his day at a reception hosted by Governor Susana Martinez of New Mexico.
The invitation only session was held at the Governor’s home and was attended by Tribal Leaders from New Mexico.
The informal meet-and-greet allowed the Speaker and other Tribal Leaders the opportunity to interact and have discussions with the Governor and her staff on matters that are most pressing for tribal communities.
Aside from the Speaker, also present were a number of the Governors from the surrounding Pueblos and representatives for the Jicarilla Apache Nation.
