AZ Dems block ‘postcard’s decree’ that would allow Nuclear Waste in Northern Arizona

Weekly Edition | April 26th | By: Editor

Phoenix, AZ –Rep. Tom Chabin, D-Flagstaff (District 2), and House Democrats all opposed a request to the federal government from the Arizona State Legislature to subsidize the storage of nuclear waste in Arizona, calling it negligent.

SCM 1004 is a memorial, commonly referred to as a “postcard” to Congress, and has no legislative authority.

“We don’t need this kind of grandstanding,” Chabin said.

Chabin last week proposed an amendment attempting to prevent Yavapai, Coconino, and Navajo counties, which he represents, from being considered for nuclear waste sites if the federal government follows the postcard’s decree. The amendment failed to be added onto SCM 1004.

“The people of Arizona certainly do not want nuclear waste in their backyard,” Chabin said on the House floor during the vote. “This is a bad idea and it comes at a bad time. We should be focused on the budget and creating real jobs and improving education. Wasting time on this postcard is irresponsible.”

SCM 1004, sponsored by Sen. Al Melvin, R- Tucson (District 26), passed the House of Representatives today 33-17, with all House Democrats voting against it. It directs Secretary of State Ken Bennett to send a copy of the “postcard” to the president of the United States, the speaker of the United States House of Representatives and to all members of Congress representing Arizona.

“Instead of actually creating jobs, the Tea Party-run legislature wants to send postcards to Congress,” House Minority Leader Chad Campbell, D-Phoenix (District 14), said. “This is an absolute waste of time. If the legislators who support this are so committed to bringing nuclear waste to Arizona they should volunteer their districts as dumping grounds and see what their constituents think. ”

  2. I had been hitchhiking on Rt. 250 near Cadiz, Ohio inside the late 1960s and a person driving amongst these SS396 Camaros stopped and picked me up. We had been on an open, straight operate of highway during the center of nowhere. The car almost launched itself. The only other car I received that feeling from was a Shelby Mustang driven by a traveling salesman with ladies underwear stacked up in boxes during the back again seat. I had some very good rides hitching in those people days.
