PHOENIX- In a interview with CNN Don Lemon, Sheriff Joe fired off on the Obama Administration for stopping deportation of all illegal immigrants ‘it’s all politics, why now?’ adding ‘we arrested 6 more last night’
Early Friday morning, The Obama Administration said they will stop deporting illegal immigrants, The swift change in policy could allow as many as 800,000 immigrants who came to the United States illegally to stay in the U.S.
As Arizona battles with the U.S. Supreme court to pass S.B. 1070, Phoenix Mayor Mayor Greg Stanton and Tucson Mayor Jonathan Rothschild co-sponsored this week at the U.S. Conference of Mayors a resolution that urges the federal government to allow DREAM Act students to apply for provisional status.
The resolution, with at least 20 additional mayors as co-sponsors, such as Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson and Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter, will be voted on Saturday by the full body of the U.S. Conference of Mayors, including mayors from across the country, who gathered in Orlando this week for their annual meeting.
“Congress has dragged its feet for far too long on the DREAM Act, and we as mayors are sending a unified message so they know it matters for youth back home,” Stanton said, adding “At a local level, we see these situations every day and its heart breaking that good kids who grew up calling our cities home could suddenly be snatched up and/or deported through no fault of their own.”
The resolution specifically requests that: “until Congress passes the DREAM Act the Department of Homeland Security should create a program allowing DREAM Act eligible youth to apply for provisional status on a case-by-case basis, thus allowing immigrant youth to pursue their dreams while contributing their considerable talents to the country they love and consider home.”
Nationwide, an estimated 2.1 million young immigrants would fall under the DREAM Act, including 114,000 in Arizona, according to a 2010 report by the nonpartisan Migration Policy Institute.
The conference resolution will be sent to members of Congress Saturday for a final vote.
The U.S. Conference of Mayors (USCM) is the official nonpartisan organization of cities with populations of 30,000 or more. There are 1,309 such cities in the country today. Each city is represented in the Conference by its chief elected official, the mayor.
