WASHINGTON—Navajo Nation President Ben Shelly issued the following statement today on the passing of Chickasaw Nation Ambassador to the United States Charles Blackwell who died Jan. 2.

“On behalf of my wife Martha Shelly, Vice President Rex Lee Jim, and the Navajo people, I want to extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Ambassador Blackwell and to the entire Chickasaw Nation.

A proud member of the Chickasaw Nation, Ambassador Blackwell was no stranger to the Navajo people. He spent many years in the 1906s teaching English to our Navajo students at Window Rock High School.

He embraced the Navajo people, culture and heritage. Ambassador Blackwell encouraged our young Native youth to pursue their education at the highest levels. We lost a friend and a champion for education and economic development and he will be missed.”
