NAVAJO LIVESTOCK DYING OF THIRST, NO WATER

LOCAL LEADERS OUTRAGED FOR SLOW RESPONSE TIME.

The community of Teec Nos Pos is under a drought warning, after local chapter officials called for a state of emergency late Friday evening. As community members try to save their livestock, the animals continue die from thirst.

According to lawmaker Kenneth Maryboy, local water wells have been closed due to water contamination, essentially triggering a water shortage.

Teec Nos Pos Chapter President Alfred Jim, said they are still waiting on the Navajo Nation, San Juan County, and other agencies to respond and so far they are dissatisfied with the reaction time from leaders. “We have to go through a lot of red tape and we can’t afford to do that,” said Jim. “We need to get water out there as soon as possible.”

Council Delegate Kenneth Maryboy also called for water tanks. “We would like to get water tanks to haul water out there, but we need assistance,” said Delegate Maryboy in a press release. “We are open to any help that our community can get.”

Local community members spoke out and said there animals are really hurting. Jay Billy posted a picture on his facebook profile of horses waiting for water at the local well. Send us your photos, [email protected] or 480-829-5726.

The article does not say what the source of the well contamination is or who is responsible for that – is it industry or uranium or agricultural run-off? …someone please fill me in. I feel absolutely terrible for the horses and other livestock and the Navajo people.too and deeply respect and appreciate all those who are trying to help with this incredibly sad situation. Unfortunately human-driven global warming is partly to blame for situations like this and I have been raising alarms about this since the mid 1980′s, but that didn’t cause the well contamination.

In some areas around the North Pole, thickness of the sea ice has declined to virtually zero, i.e. open water.

    • Ann Mond says:

I would like to know exactly who to contact and how to do that, with the possibility of conducting a fundraiser on Facebook, to get water tanks for the livestock and horses…please can someone tell me who to discuss this with? I am so upset about this situation…I already tried to find Jay Billy on FB but cannot find him at all. How do I contact Delegate Maryboy? This is not indicated within the article.

    • Nnels says:

The freaking north pole? Focus, Ann, Focus. You can make a difference for these dying animals in NE AZ but but you have you focus. road maintenance, and water.

    • Ann Mond says:

It is in fact uranium and other heavy metals polluting the wells, I found this out yesterday. I was also simply pointing out that the drought is in part created by human activity on the entire planet, a lot of people are not aware of this, or in denial about it so that is why I posted the above link. If this is not also addressed, we are going to be seeing a whole heck of a lot more crisis situations like the one in Teec Nos Pos, (with animal deaths and human deaths and the death of vegetation) and it won’t just be in some geographically challenged location as this one is. It will happen everywhere on the planet and already is.

  2. susan says:

Navajo Nation do not let them drill for gas or oil on your land . They will destroy the only water you have. If you have leaders who are for it, run them out!

  3. Sandy Brown says:

Load some buckets and water tanks on them damn pickups and haul water. This is totally not exceptible. People need to get off their ass and carry water to the livestock. what is the matter with you people? what have you all been drinking and cooking with? Give that water to the livestock. It takes longer than a day to die of thurst. I am so discusted. How very sad this is. I care nothing about the contamination at this time just water to the animals. People are to blame for this. Vehicles and buckets will water the livestock.

    • Ann Mond says:

please read this…and stop being so ignorant and sickenly self-righteous…educate yourself. The people there are doing everything they are able to, to help these animals.
The Navajo Nation EPA (NNEPA) estimates that up to 30% of the population (approximately 54,000 people) is not served by Navajo Tribal Utility Authority (NTUA) public water systems. These residents haul water either from NTUA watering points or from unregulated sources, such as livestock wells and springs. The number of unregulated water sources is estimated to be in the low thousands.
      http://www.epa.gov/region9/superfund/navajo-nation/contaminated-water.html

      • Nnels says:

Ann, Please don’t berate anyone as ignorant and self righteous. We are here because we want to help but it is shocking to us that this situation even exists. “Navajo Nation EPA (NNEPA) estimates that up to 30% of the population (approximately 54,000 people) is not served by Navajo Tribal Utility Authority (NTUA) public water systems.” And that’s OK with you? They are hauling water from unregulated sources, for not just horses and livestock and pets, but humans? And since the road is out from the river, now they have to suddenly fix the road to get by? I want to help with emergency ops with a donation, but this situation is way and far out of control. Navajo Nation has failed it’s people big time.

        • Ann Mond says:

no it’s not okay with me, I was trying to educate some animal rights advocate hating on people for not bringing water to these animals when she does not even know the situation with the road, or anything else at all here for that matter…the road needs to be graded.as it is all but impassable, certainly a semi truck with a huge water tank cannot get through ..I am conducting a fundraiser for this via a blog about to be created, am in close communication now with Kenneth Maryboy as of yesterday afternoon. If you don’t want to help Teec Nos Pos that is your right

…I also have friends now networking with horse rescues to get as many of the horses out of there as the community would like to re-home, as can be done with available resources of horse rescues, etc. I will be discussing this also with Kenneth Maryboy. I know the entire larger situation is messed up but I can’t help with that, however I can do what I can do and I am doing it.

        • I think Ann Mond knows the situation well and has been here from the start. She is not trying to berate people nor is she self righteous. Its frustrating to have to keep repeating herself …
saying the same thing over and over to help others understand what is happening.

      • Ok ..Im reading Ann Mond.

    • mandy says:

load the horses and haul them to water or load the water and haul it to the horses. Is this really that difficult? lets get it done!

    • Ricky Rogers says:

There’s NO sense in this – If we can haul gas to feed millions of cars, trucks, motor cycles, boats, planes etc. we can haul water to feed cattle & horses – this is just another greed thing.

  4. susan carter says:

This is happening all over the West. Boycott ALL Indian Casinos. Those Casinos could donate a few hundred thousand of their millions in profits. Natives need to be less passive and stop the destruction of their lands by big money white men.

  5. Ann Mond says:

THIS HORRIBLE TRAGEDY IS HAPPENING IN THE UNITED STATES, NOT AFRICA OR SOME OTHER THIRD WORLD COUNTRY:
I just got off the phone with Kenneth Maryboy of the Navajo Nation…he sounded so sad and despairing, and he said they are running out of resources to deal with it…… A blog will come on Tuesday or more likely Wednesday, with most pertinent information, video, photos and narrative about the situation affecting NAVAJO ELDERS…and their livestock and HORSES that are dying of thirst because the wells are seriously contaminated with arsenic, selenium, and uranium, and other heavy metals, as a result of decades of uranium and other mines in the general area. and the water shortage is compounded by the ongoing drought, which is nothing new. The water table has dropped 2 feet and the heavy metals in the ground still, are leaching out into the ground water because of this. There will be a paypal address for donations. THE BIGGEST OBSTACLE to helping these people with their livestock and horses IS THE ROAD – BIG WATER TRUCKS CANNOT GET THROUGH – it’s washed out in places and otherwise terribly eroded in sections…it has to be GRADED…ball park figure to get this done is APPROXIMATELY $12,000 (minus approx. $200 fuel cost for semi truck) they will get water from the river, but they have to be able to get back and forth with the TRUCK! They can barely manage to get 4-wheel drive vehicles through to these people with those gallon water bottles, to keep the ELDERS alive. A longer term solution WILL COME, but there is a lot of red-tape to be dealt with, government agencies and tribal council & etc…in the MEANTIME, death lurks and is grabbing victims.

I am going to need A LOT OF HELP, to network the blog with not only horse and animal lovers, but ENVIRONMENTALISTS AND NATIVE AMERICAN SUPPORTERS, and others of GOOD HEART AND CONSCIENCE who know that our government has historically done wrong by Native Americans.

I CANNOT do this merely with my own present network of good people. Let’s pull out all the stops on this one. This is serious. I will post the blog here as soon as it is made and I encourage everyone to share it…let’s get this road graded and fuel purchased and water delivered AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. WE CAN DO THIS. Please join us.

    • Nnels says:

How has the Navajo Nation, with its many fine casinos and Grand Canyon and other attractions, and its agriculture and leases, allowed it to get to this point? No good roads, no good water due to allowing inept mining, no leadership from the Navajo Nation to react to an emergency situation, and no one saw it coming? Well at least you have identified a solution, FIX THE DAMN ROAD to get water from the river. I live down by Tucson and can’t help physically but please post more info and I’ll try and help if I can with a donation.

    • Kate Bathurst says:

Ann, I’d like to add my support to helping with ensuring the animals and people have clean drinking water please send me an FB message with the effort your organizing.
We all know the problem of mining over the years polluting our water supply especially around reservations. Where is Indian affairs, the BLM who approved the leasing for mining, and everyone else making a fast buck off. At this point it’s not about how to fix the problem it’s about addressing this crisis. Praying for all

    • Deb Puckett says:

Ann – please post a facebook page or let me know how to network this cause. I know many people across the country who would gladly contribute some money to get this done. $12,000 is not that much money when divided between hundreds or thousands of animal lovers.

      • Ann Mond says:

Deb, thanks for your offer of help, very much. I will look for you on Facebook and there is going to be a page about this, another horse advocate is creating it for me. There will also be a public blog as part of the page content, with a paypal link for donations. The blog won’t be ready until after Kenneth Maryboy gives me what I need to have my friend create the blog….there is a meeting on Tuesday he is part of, and after that I will have what I need for blog content. Hope that makes sense and hope I can find you on Facebook. I will come back here later with the link to the page and to the fundraising blog.

      • Ann Mond says:

Deb, there are tons of Deb Pucketts on Facebook, I can’t find you! find me! Annie Mond

  6. Chris C says:

why is it a emergency? the Navajo nation should be able to get water trucks from the local coal mine or rent them from Gallup were in the 20th century they don’t have to use horses to get the water there COME ON! and what about all this Navajo water rights stuff? were is that water? if the Navajo Nation can spend thousands of dollars of on super bowl size rings then what is a few bucks to haul water?

    • Ann Mond says:

yes they SHOULD be able to except for the problem with the road being impassable by any vehicle large enough to haul a large volume of water…the problem is not finding a water truck, that is easy. The problem is also bureaucratic red tape which makes everything take much longer than can work in this situation. This is unfortunately an immediate crisis and animals and people, especially ELDERS, are suffering, and animals are DYING…dead animals lying around….people can rant and rave about why doesn’t this or that happen, and I’m sure Kennet
h Maryboy feels the same way, but none of that right NOW is going to get this community the help it needs NOW.

  7. nnels says:

Interesting question about the casino industry involvement and also lack of action by the Navaho Leaders. If this is truly a “Navajo Nation” – where is the Navajo Nation emergency response? Waiting on Obama? Good luck with that.
Nearby on Navajo land at the Grand Canyon, a widely promoted tightrope walking stunt was done to promote the great Navajo Nation and the majestic lands…while animals are dieing of thirst due to an unnamed “contamination” of the wells in Teec Nos Pos.

    • Annie Mond says:

The contamination of the wells is from heavy metals and uranium, just as I suspected. Kenneth Maryboy confirmed this yesterday when I talked to him on the phone. The general area (not specific to Teec Nos Pos) is in the vicinity of a Superfund site, which is why I posted the link above, so that people could know that. That was before I talked to Kenneth Maryboy. I’m sure he as well is frustrated with all the same things you are, Nnels. How much do you know about this man? I researched him before contacting him…he is a good man with a big heart and he is in anguish over the situation of these elders and their animals, it was totally obvious when I talked to him that he is in deep distress. He just started pouring out all his feelings and thoughts about everything…for example…coyotes are attracted to the carcasses of dead animals, then leave ticks behind that transmit Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever to the animals or people they bite…the people’s dogs come around and get the ticks on them too, then go home with the ticks, that bite the humans…this is a very ugly situation, and needs help from the larger community beyond the Navajo Nation…I am just trying to be of service since help was requested and responded to…I am not forcing myself on anyone…just offering the skills and network I have. Not much else I can do.

  8. Nnels says:

And if you think that was cynical, how about this regarding the picture (if it is indeed of a herd of Navajo horses) – why in the heck is there such a large herd of horses on the Navajo Nation? Are they “wild” or just allowed to breed out of all control?

  9. Elaine says:

Nnels, I’m with you – why have so many animals that you can’t care for? If you drive from Flagstaff AZ to Page AZ, through Navajo land, you will be horrified by the underfed livestock standing in the glaring sun. Don’t have animals you can’t care for. The Navajo nation has plenty of money, funnel it out of the casinos and help your tribesmen and while you are at it, have some animal husbandry education.

    • Nnels says:

Thanks Elaine. Waiting for back blast from Ann. And it has just occurred to me that many of the people who are in such trouble, don’t even have running water or electricity; they don’t read our words or know how to reach us, or their Navajo Nation leaders. And I don’t understand why that has come to be.

      • Ann Mond says:

I am just one person, I cannot fix the larger problems and I am aware of them. Kenneth Maryboy reached out for help, I felt I could help, I contacted him on his cell-phone after some friends of mine found it for me, I talked to him yesterday for about 30 minutes and I CAN help with fundraising, I have the skills and experience managing things of this nature online and I have a large network of passionate animal lovers willing to support my efforts…this is what I PERSONALLY, with the help of others, CAN DO….to help with an immediate crisis situation…so…I am doing it. I’m sorry if this upsets anyone, but I am doing my best. I’m tired of being a target. I haven’t done anything wrong nor is the larger situation my responsibility.

  10. Isn’t San Juan river not to far off to the north? Where does the Navajo nation have a say so to rights of the river? Could we herd the live stocks there?

  11. Christi says:

I am peripherally familiar with the Navajo Nation, and there are a lot of issues there. The important thing in this case is that there is at least ONE person reaching out for help. My expertise comes from a dog case with them. The Nation is vast, and there are new efforts coming forth to address situations that are out of control. The horses are one thing, dogs another. I have seen estimates indicating there are over 250,000 FERAL aka, UNOWNED dogs roaming the over 27,000 square miles that encompasses the Navajo Nation. This culture is quite different from the US culture, and must be respected. The fact that anybody is reaching out for help is huge, and we must NOT JUDGE, rather offer what we can. The horse numbers are unknown to me, but I have heard that they are just as high as the dog numbers, and are owned in some cases and feral in others. Point is that yes- there is a drought there. PERIOD. The situation of contaminated water well, threatening human lives is likely a real, and very serious situation. Help would be appreciated I am sure, but we, from the outside of a sovereign nation, must use compassion and remove any blame from the situation as it stands in order to be allowed to provide help. They need it. Annie, please organize something, I can’t. A paypal page to help fund the road, and perhaps pay for water if needed would be helpful I am sure.

    • Ann Mond says:

for those on Facebook, here is a group.
      https://www.facebook.com/groups/WaterAngels.TeecNosPos/
and there WILL be a blog coming AS SOON AS POSSIBLE…it can be shared publicly and it will have a paypal link for those who wish to donate. I would like to ask everyone who really cares about doing something very practical RIGHT NOW relative to this situation to share the blog everywhere possible, in emails and all social networks you are involved with. it has to go viral, we are trying to accomplish this in a finite amount of time, as I am sure there is at least one animal dying there right now as I type these words. People are also using contaminated water for themselves and their animals. There are a lot of ELDERS in Teec Nos Pos and the contaminated water and the drought is not their fault.

  12. Kinlichiinii says:

Why can we impose on ourselves a livestock reduction to let the land heal, i do think we are ruining our country with these immense heard that cannot be sustained by the land and expect someone to fix it. the only solution is to remove the animals to let the land heal itself…

    • Ann Mond says:

you are so right…and in this area the animals can’t even be removed because of the road. There are also horse rescues willing to do what they can if the people living there are wiling for that…I was told this by a woman who sent out an email to 50 horse rescues in the state of AZ…but without a navigable road, they can’t get in there.

  17. S Pool says:

Those that would criticize Navajo leadership should also criticize the American oligopoly responsible. The Navajo’s current situation is a preview of what will happen to millions of Americans as the the BLM allows the oil industry to trade groundwater for “fracked” natural gas nationwide.

The chapter officials need to be held accountable for this. The grazing officer, Herman Lee, has had ample time to address this issue as it was brought up to his attention. The only thing he seems to be passionate about is trying to get a bathroom addition to his house. Alfred Jim, also needs to know what his job requirements. He has ample time to put people in place for situations like this. The chapter has over 1/4 million dollars in funding as of March. They have received a grant from FEMA for over $9000 just this past month in which the monies have been disbursed and deposited into the Teec Nos Pos Chapter House fund. They have also over $14000 in Emergency Funding for situations like this. A plan of action should have been put in place long before this crisis occurred. We have the means but we don’t have competent leaders here at the chapter level to deal with these types of problems. Alfred Jim, Teec Nos Pos Chapter President, needs to know that we need a leader that is informed and knows the protocol for situations like this. John Begay, the same thing is about to happen here in NM. We may not have as many horses in one location. I saw starving horses and called them. the response is ‘those are wild” well, guess what? they are fenced in on your land. as if wild horses don’t require water or grass, They are on desert land. But the Casino is right next door featuring Chppendale Male strippers and Pink Pelvis, whatever filth that is. Time to get real. The grazing guy said he “saw a mare staggering around last week.” (now over 2 weeks. He should be fired and put out of the community. He has no idea that he has a job to do.

  20. I just came thru there last week, it is hot in the high 90s, they are about 50 miles, maybe alil more from cortez colorado, is there no way to get some water hauled in from there?? if any just a few times a week, do they not have enuf funds to get the truck there and back maybe a company in cortez would help out with even one truck load of water to the people and animals a week until something can be done to get the road fixed or the water cleaned up.I sure do wish I would of known this when I went through there I would of brought my 2 water tanks from colorado and donated them. I am back in montana now but will help if I can.

  21. Can some local companies be contacted for donation? Too much bureaucracy and too many hoops to jump. Often local business and private citizens can get something done faster. Could a local t.v.station be contacted to publicize the situation? Those preaching about global warming need to talk to China and India about their emissions. They are building a new power plant EVERY WEEK!

  22. Kenny says:

This is a No Brainer there should be no “Red Tape” unless the usless tax sucking FEMA is involved. We can attack other countries in the sums of Trillions of dollars and spend Millions on coffee for our leaders. Send them convoys of water and if they eed more send them more.
