KYAT becomes first all Navajo language FM station.
On October 1 at 5 a.m., 94.5 FM listeners from Leupp, AZ to Albuquerque, NM awoke to Delmar Bonis’ Apache Jam – the de facto introduction to Eugene Plummer Sr.’s morning radio show. Plummer played the same song he’s used to kick off his show for the past 10 years, but on October 1st , it was different. Eugene Plummer and KYAT began making history.
KYAT is the first ever all Navajo language FM station, broadcasting from Gallup, NM. 85,000 watts of high-powered signal allows KYAT to broadcast in Navajo 24 hours a day. The Navajo AM stations power down during the night, weakening their signals. KYAT uses three DJs who broadcast live every day. The live broadcasts start with Eugene Plummer Sr, from 5 a.m. until 11 a.m., transition to Buddy Lee at 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. and end with Roy Keeto, who closes out the day from 5 p.m. until 10 p.m. The late night and pre-dawn programming is recorded material provided by Eugene and Roy. All three DJs speak Navajo (Dine Bizaad) throughout their entire shows, and almost all commercials are in Navajo.

Eugene Plummer Sr., has 10 years of radio broadcasting experience. He started out with KGAk but recently joined KYAT, intrigued by their all Navajo language format.
explains. “Dine Bizaad is a sacred language given to us by the holy people.” He believes that when Dine Bizaad is heard in the home, it blesses the home. He hopes that KYAT will educate the youth and encourage them to speak and understand Dine Bizaad. He stresses that it is important to learn your language.
KYAT can be found at 94.5 on the FM band.
