Albuquerque breaks Ground on New Recycling Facility

Sept. 7 | By: Dayna Gardner

Albuquerque, NM – Mayor Richard J. Berry, the Solid Waste Management Department and Friedman Recycling formally broke ground on a new state of the art single-stream Material Recovery Facility (MRF) today. The brand new MRF is part of a public/private partnership between the City of Albuquerque and Friedman Recycling.

Scheduled to be in full operation by March 2013, the new MRF will allow the Solid Waste Management Department to complete distribution of recycle carts to Albuquerque residents. This brand new, state of the art, 87,000 square foot MRF will be a single stream, dry processing, and sorting facility. It is estimated that 120,000 tons of recyclable material will be sorted at the new facility each year, helping to reduce the amount of trash that is sent to the landfill.

“Today we break ground on a new facility that forever changes the way Albuquerque recycles,” Mayor Richard J. Berry said.  “This state of the art facility brings with it 35 new jobs for the Albuquerque economy and will grow to 75 employees over time.”

The new MRF will cost an estimated $19M to build. Friedman Recycling will pay all cost associated with building the new MRF.

“We are proud to have formed this partnership with a city that understands the importance of recycling,” said David Friedman, CEO Friedman Recycling. “Friedman Recycling is happy to be a corporate citizen of the City of Albuquerque and looks forward to a strong partnership.”

Once individuals receive their blue cart, they will notice a major change in the city’s new recycling program. The type of new materials that will be collected at the curb will increase dramatically. With such an extreme increase in acceptable materials for recycling the city anticipates a drastic reduction in the amount of trash that residents throw into the landfill each year.
