New Mexico steps in for Hurricane Sandy relief efforts

SANTA FE – On Friday, Governor Susana Martinez signed an Executive Order to support the deployment of New Mexico resources in the ongoing relief and recovery projects following Hurricane Sandy.
The Executive Order makes $200,000 available to the Department of Homeland Security & Emergency Management to coordinate the deployment and support of New Mexico resources for Hurricane Sandy relief efforts.
“Shortly after the storm made landfall, New Mexico notified the affected states that we were available to help in any way we could. This executive order ensures that New Mexico’s support will be able to move the minute it is requested,” Governor Martinez said. “As the recovery effort moves on, these states will look farther and farther beyond their borders for help to relieve staff and fill equipment needs. It’s times like these that Americans come together and support one another. I’m proud that New Mexico is ready and able to extend a helping hand during this time of need.”
Hurricane Sandy made landfall on October 29, 2012 and its effects continue to be felt by millions of Americans. It has already claimed the lives of over 110 Americans. Damage is estimated to exceed $50 billion. With millions of people displaced or affected by the storm, New Mexico is committed to lending support.
On Wednesday, November 14, 2012, the New Mexico Department of Homeland Security & Emergency Management will deploy a Donations Management Coordinator to help track and disseminate donations coming in from around the country. Other deployments are expected over the next several days and weeks. While the cost of sending personnel and equipment eventually will be reimbursed by the Presidential Disaster Declaration for the Storm, this executive order allows New Mexico assets to move immediately upon being requested.
Requests for state-to-state assistance are made through the Emergency Management Assistance Compact (EMAC). Through the EMAC system, states in need of assistance can list the resources and/or personnel they are requesting. States capable of providing that assistance respond through the system and are reimbursed through the federally declared disaster declaration. Many of the resources initially requested came from nearby states. As the situation continues and resources are expended, the need to draw from states as far away as the West Coast increases.
Due to the winter storm on the East Coast, a 10-person debris-clearing crew through the New Mexico State Forestry Division was delayed from its Friday, November 9 deployment. If weather permits, the Las Vegas District Crew will carry out a 14-day assignment to clear debris from storm-ravaged areas.
Additional state resources and personnel are on standby and will be deployed upon request.
“This recovery will take a long time and as resources and support are requested, New Mexico will not delay,” Governor Martinez said.
New Mexican businesses, non-profits, and private citizens are continuing to help deliver support in various ways. On October 31, 2012, Governor Martinez met with six volunteers with the Red Cross awaiting deployment. New Mexico Red Cross now has 12 volunteers deployed to affected states. Prior to the storm’s landfall, PNM sent a crew of 40 employees to Washington, DC to ensure the quick return of power to our Nation’s Capital.
If New Mexicans are looking for a way to help, they are encouraged to make a cash donation to reputable relief organizations such as the Red cross or the Salvation Army. A full list of organizations can be found at www.nvoad.org/members.
