Should this be a mandatory requirement?

ALBUQUERQUE – As the Gun Debate continues throughout America, cities across the U.S. are starting new programs to start accepting firearms and ammunition from anyone who wishes to trash them, and the land of enchantment made that very clear on Friday.

“It is not unusual for the department to receive requests from citizens asking that guns be destroyed,” Chief Ray Schultz said. “Most of the time when we receive these types of requests they come from grandparents who want firearms out of their home because they worry about grandchildren finding them and a tragedy occurring.”

According to Mayor Richard J. Berry and Police Chief Ray Schultz, they announced Friday Dec. 28, they are launching a new program Friday ‘designed to keep Albuquerque safer.’

The Mayors office said, every Saturday in January the Albuquerque Police Department will be accepting firearms and ammunition from anyone throughout the State who wishes to dispose of them.  Guns will also be accepted every second Saturday of each month after January.

According to Breanne Anderson, a city spokes person, residents can either drop off firearms and/or ammunition at the Metropolitan Forensic Science Center also known as the APD Crime Lab located at 5350 2nd St. NW, from 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. on the designated disposal dates or they can call Crime Lab Director, Marc Adams, at (505) 235-3159 to make arrangements for in-town pickup or drop off.

City officials said, firearms and ammunition will be accepted without question.  Any firearm with a significant historical value will be preserved.  All firearms will be checked to see if they are stolen and if so will be returned to their rightful owner.  All other firearms will be destroyed. APD already destroys an average of 120 firearms per month that come into the position of APD through criminal investigations, seizures and that are randomly found within the city.

“I don’t have a vote in Congress, but this is one very meaningful program that I can implement as a Mayor to protect our children and our community,” Mayor Berry said  “It allows folks who don’t want a gun in their home for whatever reason a safe and secure disposal method.”

Sen. Dianne Feinstien will sponsor a bill in Congress in Jan. of 2013 to ban automatic military style weapons, with the recent tragic event in Newtown- the debate continues.
