Shelly pushes for energy independence

WASHINGTON – The Navajo President was in the Nations Capitol this week and testified before congress, he called for more energy independence and job creation on the Navajo Nation.

President Shelly explained, the Navajo Nation is all tied up in red tape and called for more freedom to create jobs, “We have the natural resources, the ability to create jobs, we have the sun and the wind.  We’re tied up with federal red tape.  If you get rid of that we can do more job creation.  Direct funding means jobs on Navajo.”

According to Jared King, the Communication Director for the Navajo Nation Washington Office, he said the President also got a private tour of the U.S. Supreme Court and also meant with executives from Verizon and Terramark, where the President toured a 500,000 square foot data center outside the Washington, D.C. area.

Terramark has data centers throughout North American, Latin American, Europe, and Asia.

The President told the executives, “Technology is the foundation we’ve made over the last three years,” Adding, “We’ve been building a high speed broadband network that will be turned on this year.” he said as they toured the data center.

  1. This reports comes from health communities. What’s the matter with our Navajo Nation’s President…money is not everything. “These conclusions leave no room for doubt or delay,” says Kristen Welker-Hood, SCD MSN RN, PSR’s director of environment and health programs. “The time has come for our nation to establish a health-driven energy policy that replaces our dependence on coal with clean, safe alternatives. Business as usual is extracting a deadly price on our health. Coal is no longer an option.”

Also participating in the report’s release were the American Lung Association and the American Nurses Association.

Coal combustion releases mercury, particulate matter, nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide, and dozens of other substances known to be hazardous to human health. This report looks at the cumulative harm inflicted by those pollutants on three major body organ systems: the respiratory system, the cardiovascular system, and the nervous system. The report also considers coal’s contribution to global warming, and the health implications of global warming.
